Most times, you don't need to climb onto the roof to clean out gutters and downspouts. In some cases, however, you might need to use a ladder. Dirty and debris can cause injury to your eyes, hands, or other exposed areas of the body.

When it comes to roof or gutter repair, safety should always be your first priority This is what you should do:

1. Wear safety glasses

2. Get your gloves on.

3. Wear non-slip shoes

4. Wear a mask if your allergy to dust, pollen or other allergens is severe.

5. Refer to the NSC ladder safety guidelines.

6. Make sure you plan ahead and clean your gutters daily.

7. A gutter specialist should be able to handle gutters higher than the first floor.

• Remove all debris.

It is highly recommended to replace gutters that are badly damaged, rusted or otherwise compromised. Gutter/downspouts made of aluminum, copper or vinyl are a good investment because they resist corrosion and last longer.

Your gutters catch water and debris from your roof. Your downspouts do the rest. Without them, all that water could drain to your foundation, putting your foundation at risk.
